Keynote Speaking
“No Couch Required”
~ Imagine if you could read the bubble above the head of your shrink? What would it really say about YOU?
~ Imagine if your brain could actually share what IT is doing when it gives you the middle finger around your goals, relationships, and plans?
A Howard Stern-meets-Dr. Phil talk that shares what shrinks really feel about their patients. Addressing the self-help market as John Stewart & Stephen Colbert have done with politics, this talk will highlight the edgy, provocative truth of what the brain really thinks of those touchy-feely psychotherapy sessions or that 7 tips and tools book about airy, nonsensical “quantum change.” With humor and practical insights on what most shrinks don’t know they don’t know about human decision making, behavior change problems, relationship concerns, etc. Dr. Fleming will help people understand the “predictably irrational” parts of us that all self-help folks and feel good coaches forget about, twist into half-truths, label away as crazy, or simply medicate.
Boldly changing the way we change, or think about change, this talk is NOT:
- Another hum drum talk-at-you speech that offers a takeway comprised of great answers for solving the wrong problem/s
- Another expert blabbing along with smart-souding psychobabble
FORMAT:
Can be done solo or preferably as a “counter” voice to an established self-help presentation where their rational/advice centered ways can be challenged by hidden neuro laws we ignore that make that stuff wishful thinking. Picture this talk as a “USB plug in” or flashdrive to any hardware built around a conference, meeting, or event centered around human nature, the brain, self-growth, or change (corporate or personal). This is a fluid solution that can plug into many often controversial dyads — male vs female, mind vs brain, shrink loving vs shrink hating, irrational vs. rational…
WHY IS THIS TALK IMPORTANT:
While Stewart and Colbert discovered the power of the satirical implicit dialogue we all carry around the absurdity in politics, there is one around psychology and therapy, but we rarely speak it. What shrinks have forgotten is their expertness IS their problem. Their training IS their barrier. Their modality of how they work with people IS the reason that transfer of learning rarely happens. They have ignored the brain, and fallen in love with the mind. But it is the brain that is the paper that covers rock when it comes to behavior change.
The field of science fueling much of the work of Grey Matters is “neuroeconomics”, a study of odd irrational choice structures that govern neural networks and make us all look like we are fickle creatures having no idea of this central premise: we have no idea we don’t want what we say we want while convincing ourselves and others otherwise. This “red herring” verbally/linguistically is what most shrinks and feel good coaches get “hooked” on.
