It isn’t all that often that we hear of physicians and attorneys struggling with things like drug addiction, chemical dependency, gambling addiction, alcoholism, co-occurring disorders and so on. People who work in the field of law and medicine tend to be placed on a pedestal and often times have a God complex, and thus as their mere mortal clients or patients, it rarely occurs to us that they too, have a tendency of getting into trouble within the cycle of addiction and alcoholism. After all, consider not only the amount of pressure these industry professionals are forced to endure, but likewise, the enormous respect and codependency they experience on the part of other in their lives. Imagine being someone who, within reason, becomes accustomed to people doing as you tell them. For those in a slippery slope type of situation it would lend itself to be potentially dangerous ground in the sense of other confronting you on questionable behavior, thereby enabling the individual.
In the case of doctors and other medical professionals it’s no surprise that prescription drug abuse is becoming more and more prevalent, but what about lawyers? Why do they so commonly find themselves in drug & alcohol related dilemmas? First of all, these people con often live a rather lavish nightlife riddled with expensive habits, beautiful people, promiscuity and basically workaholism by day and living on the edge by night. Add to that the enormous stress and competitive nature of their careers and it’s no surprise how it becomes that they need an edgy sort of release while away from the office. For those whom are able to draw lines in the sand and know when to stop, things turn out okay. Maybe they have a few run-ins with problems and subsequently shape up. But for those without the ability to self-manage their party lifestyle, things usually don’t end up so well.
