In 1995, the top consumer advocacy publication Consumer Reports put issued a report on the effectiveness of psychotherapy and the lowest scores went to marriage counselors as compared to other treatment providers. Quite often people associate couples counseling with those offering similar services for married folks and for all intent and purpose, the two are much the same. When you look at it from a final analysis point of view, how much of a disparity is there really when comparing counselors who focus on couples as opposed to married individuals?
It’s important to remember that in order for couples counseling to be truly effective it must address not only the prevailing issues, but likewise, the underlying components. When two people involved in a romantic relationship are in need of problem resolution we must consider that the potential source or sources of the problem is or are dramatically amplified. We’re no longer just talking about one individual and his or her issues, it’s now about two individuals coupled with the added component of romance, not to mention how each personality and its associated life’s experiences interact with the other. Couples counseling, when done correctly as it is so often not, must first look at the individual in a manner that is completely separate from the other…
Our unique and highly effective approach to couples counseling begins deep within the mind of the individual on a dual level while considering the added variables of the relationship dynamic. We cannot unravel and resolve the issues facing the end product, the “relationship as a whole,” until understanding and resolving its players. The goal is to create effective, long-term change that results in new found joys and contentment. After all, relationships are one of life’s greatest gifts!
